Panpsychism Is the Future Philip Goff (Durham University, Durham, United Kingdom) PL9
The philosophical case against materialism is overwhelming. If that's true, why is it still the majority position among philosophers, scientists and the general public? The problem is that people are never convinced by the kind of fiddly arguments people like me and David Chalmers spend most of our time engaged with. Rather, they are motivated by a big picture narrative. The narrative that inspires materialists is that the success of science gives us grounds for thinking that science will one day account for consciousness. It is this narrative that materialists must respond to, by explaining how radically different the problem of consciousness is from any other scientific problem. I will argue that once the problem of consciousness is seen in the right light, it's pretty clear that the best solution to that problem is panpsychism.
