Orch-OR: New results on the physics of OR Roger Penrose (Mathematical Institute, University of Oxford, Oxford, London United Kingdom) PL11
According to the Hameroff-Penrose Orch-OR proposal, the phenomenon of consciousness depends not only upon large-scale quantum coherence taking place in the brain, but also upon the phenomenon of the collapse of the wave-function being an objective physical phenomenon (OR: the Objective Reduction of the quantum state). There is as yet no accepted theory of OR, but some leading candidates propose that the gravitational field is responsible. Although a recent experiment appears to have eliminated a prominent version of this proposal, the experimental results are in accordance with the OR scheme adopted in Orch-OR. In this scheme there are curious temporal effects that could well clarify some early experimental results due to Libet.
